Cordingley puzzle 5
White to play and win
Solution
This ranks as the worst puzzle so far. Better would be to make the question ‘find a reasonably sensible move which doesn’t win’. Cordingley’s solution is 1 Be6, and then long variations, but my instinctive first move was 1e5!, just based on general principles of opening lines. I think I would have played it without calculating much, partly because there is no need to calculate hard: black has many responses at each time, so why waste energy? Instead, just open the e file, also open the Qc6 path to e6, and also note that LPDO (John Nunn’s loose pieces drop off) applies to the Rh8, if white can play Qf6+ check. Houdini confirms 1 e5 is indeed best, with a phenomenal plus; and also likes the equally sensible Re1 and Nf3, ranking each of these as similar to Be6.
