Test your chess: Reitstein problem 2

December 26, 2013

Black to play and win

Ponelis-Savinson Johannesburg Open 1970

Solution

A common trick, often seen in rook endings, wins the game here. 1…Rb2! with the idea that 2 Qb2 Qh1+ 3 Kf2 Qh2+ skewers the king and LPDO queen.

I played Rb2! 44 years ago, nice to see you using the game. Albert Ponelis and I had quite a few exciting games. All the best, from Andrew Savinson
