Daily Chess Puzzle IOM

October 12, 2019

Today’s problem is from the current Chess.com Grand Swiss in Douglas, Isle of Man.

As is my custom, I only say which side is to play: and not giving an idea if the move wins or otherwise, unless on occasion I think signposting would be helpful. Instead, the problems are posed with the instruction to decide what you would play, as in a game.

White to play

Safarli Eltaj - Rodshtein Maxim (21...Rh8)

Safarli, E v Rodshtein, M; Douglas, Isle of Man. October 2019

Solution

1 Qh6+!

I wonder if Black saw this coming, or if he had a shock?

Safarli Eltaj - Rodshtein Maxim (22.Qh6+)

Black played 1…Kg8, met with 2 f5 ef 3 Rf5! again exploiting the LPDO Qd6.

Safarli Eltaj - Rodshtein Maxim (24.Rxf5)

FEN
