Mate in three puzzle from Gibraltar

June 2, 2013

White to play and mate in three

Earlier today I posted this puzzle at the foot of my item about the forthcoming Gibraltar Junior Chess Festival. I thought I would re-post it, with the solution below.

Solution

The trick with this problem is to find a way of avoiding stalemate without releasing the king. I saw this puzzle in a shop window in Gibraltar; couldn't solve it at first, so took a photo with my iPhone, and walked around down the street. After a while, the solution came to me: 1 g8(N)! b5 2 Ne7 Kb4 3 Nc6 mate.

Very pretty,

I struggled with this one a bit. But after trying almost every legal move and nothing worked I saw the under promotion and the rest of the line. Very nice one.
    Suggestion:
Have you considered writing the solution to these puzzle as a comment? because sometimes I find it hard looking at the board without seeing the solution underneath. Or maybe you can leave more space between the diagram and solution.
    Thanks

Thank you for your suggestion. I have had comments either way: some liked Q&A on the same page, others, like you, suggested comments or separate postings.

I am actually a long way ahead with my blogging- several puzzles are easy, and it is terribly hard to then not look at another one, plus I need the facility to not be doing chess, e.g. when on our family holidays. What I think I will do is switch to two postings- one question, one answer, from puzzle 129, i.e after the next “64” puzzles, and see how that goes.

Glad you are following (and hopefully) enjoying my Cordingley project. Also glad that the ‘create an engine’ blog might help you as it has me.

      Best wishes

      Allan
