Daily chess puzzle: Check Mate #148

November 2, 2016

Another puzzle from Dragoslav Andric’s 1981 book “Matni Udar”.

White to play and mate Black

Horowitz v Stevens, SAD 19444

At first I thought it was a Black to play and win (the book doesn’t say which side it is to move) but if so, it is trivial. Slightly harder is White to play: 1 Rc8+! Bc8 (1…Kf7 2 Qc7+ Bd7[] 3 Qd7 mate) 2 Qe8+ Rf8

3 Rg7+ Kg7 4 Qg6+ and 5 Qh7 mate; if 3…Kh8 then 4 Qh5+ forces the same line to occur.
