Daily chess puzzle: Check Mate #236

February 16, 2017
Another puzzle from Dragoslav Andric’s 1981 book “Matni Udar”.
White to play and win
Ludolf v Koc, Leningrad 1960.
Firstly, Megabase has the game as 1962, not 1960.
Quite pretty. It is immediately clear that White needs to get access to the a1-h8 diagonal. But how?
Examine all biffs: 1 Rd8+! is the neat solution. If 1…Kg7, then White is just a rook up after 2 Rc8. So, the rook must be captured. But 1…Rd8 2 Qc3+ and mates; 1…Qd8 2 Qe5+ and mates.
