Daily chess puzzle: Check Mate #392

July 31, 2017

Another puzzle from Dragoslav Andric’s 1981 book “Matni Udar”.

White to play and mate Black

Ivanovic v Popovic, 1974

I suspect I have seen this puzzle before, because the solution came to me instantly: 1 h6+ Kh8 2 Be6!

If 2…Qe6, then 3 Qf8+ Qg8 4 Qf6+ mates; and if the bishop moves, 2 Qd4+, or if 2…d5, 3 Qe5+ mate.
