Daily chess puzzle: Check Mate #434

September 14, 2017

434 14/9
Another puzzle from Dragoslav Andric’s 1981 book “Matni Udar”.
White to play and mate Black

Arhipov v Ajnhorn, USSR 1976.
Solution
A fantastic one: a lovely main line. Black can grovel (e.g. 1…Be7 and 2…Qg6) but the main line is
1 Re6+!

1… fe

2 Bh5+ Ke7

3 Nc6+!!
which is a very unusual motif: either capture leads to a different mate. 3…Nc6 4 Qd7mate, or 3…Bc6 4 Nc8 mate.

Very nice.
