Daily chess puzzle: Check Mate #462

October 12, 2017

Another puzzle from Dragoslav Andric’s 1981 book “Matni Udar”.
Black to play and mate White

Starke v Okrajek, Leipzig 1979
Solution
Given it is a problem, 1…Rc3! has to be the initial move: 2 bc[] and the Qb3 is cut off, permitting 2…Be3! and Qh3-Qg2 can’t be prevented.

I would say it is an odd position, since Black is already a piece up, so really ‘anything wins’.
