It’s Your Move: daily chess puzzle # 14

White to play and win

Ivkov v Portisch, Bled 1961

Solution

There must be a mate, but how? White's rook stands in the way of his Bf4 (after 1 Nc5+ Ka5[]) so 1 Rc6+! is a nice clearance sacrifice: 1…Bc6[] 2 Nc5+ Ka5[] 3 Bc7 mate.

Not too hard, since the line is forced, but pretty nevertheless.

I was thinking of 1.Cc5+ and 2.Rb7 next, threatening mate both in c7 or b5, but happens that it loses after 2…Rg1+. Nice tactics!
